General News

This Christmas and Independence day The Grand Czar visited Wengen to celebrate and recover from severe asthma that had been hindering his ability to take charge of the country. His Regal Majesty delivered the following joint Independence/New Years Speach on Independence day:

Greetings to all citizens, I congratulate you all on your first year of Cyrenian citizenship. This has been an amazing year of ups and downs, high points and low points, and also great success. On the day I thought up this nation, on a cold wintery day in late December, I had no idea it would become what it is now. It was initially humourous, and then, on the 14th of January 2005, we had a website. From then on the country evolved and grew into the lively and vibrant state you see today. We quickly gained contacts outside of Cyrenia, joining the UM (United Micronations) in February and obtaining diplomatic relations with Westarctica and Molossia. We also had a low point between June and September when activity receded to an all time low and over 85% of citizens ceased to be Cyrenians. However in late August/early September the country underwent a reformation and emerged better than ever. Now, on the path to true statehood we will stand back and acknowledge a wonderful year of achievements to the tune of the national anthem.

He also anounced plans for the upcoming year which can be seen on the website. He celebrated New Year in Atherstone, giving personal new years best wishes to every citizen and Cyrenia also observed 2 minutes silence on December 26th- The 1st anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deep sympathy to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Mississipi, Alabama and Louisiana, and to totally condemn the horror of the dispicable terrorist attacks that took place in the middle of rush hour, London, UK, 7th of July 05, both of these I have not had chance to mention because of inactivity and various other reasons.

Update from Grand Czar

Dear Citizens,
Again, we have a new website. We were in the process of updating the old one before the inactivity crisis and never finished it, unfortunately. However the new one is easy to navigate, same design, and is easier to use. There will be a new section for Citizens resources coming soon. You can find it at the same web address, www.cyrenia-gov.tk, although instead of http://cyrenia0.tripod.com/ you can now also find it at http://cyrenia-gov.tripod.com
We are well on the way to the new Cyrenia as well, plans for a new constitution and government structure are in place, and we have rethought many of our policies and legislation systems. A contributor to the new constitution has also decided to become a citizen, which brings our total number to 7, following the return of Prince Julius from inactivity.

Do Not try the website until 8:15pm tonight as it is unpublished currently.

Emergency message from HIM the Grand Czar

Cyrenia is active. During the last two months up to 95% of our citizens were officially declared inactive, and there citizenships revoked. It appeared we had gone into a black time, with only 5 active citizens remaining- HIH Prince Simon-Edgar, HIH the Princess Regent Theresa, HIH Prince Emil, Commander Ian Kind GCG, and myself, although Prince Julius and the Lame duck Minister of State David Whaley became inactive very late. However, out of the darkness came some hope- We could have a new reformed Cyrenia, designed to attract new and more loyal citizens. The real, solid earth Cyrenia has completed that reformation, and now it is time to declare our activity and solidarity to the world by redesigning our website and online features, plus our legislation and constitution. All treaties will not be affected by these changes. Now, we shall, as the declaration of independence states, call upon our great people to rally upon the banner of Cyrenia, in the name of freedom, honour, and life, to cherish and defend it, so that it may be the symbol of liberty and dignity in our homeland, which is a homeland for the free, now and always.

Zimbabwean Deportations

A hunger strike by asylum seekers demanding an end to forced deportations to Zimbabwe has entered its sixth day.
Their protest has triggered calls to end deportations back to the southern African nation.

Scores of Zimbabweans are refusing food in several UK immigration detention centres.
The protest is over the lifting of a ban that prevented them being deported.
The Home Office says there 41 detained Zimbabweans on hunger strike - campaigners claim there are more than 100.
Meanwhile, politicians and church figures have joined calls for a resumption of the Home Office ban.
Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesman Mark Oaten MP said he would be writing to the Home Secretary.
He said: "In these dreadful circumstances, we should place all deportations to Zimbabwe on hold.
"The Robert Mugabe regime is wholly unsafe and plainly has no respect for human rights."
The Right Rev Colin Fletcher, Bishop of Dorchester, said: "There is suffering and danger facing those asylum seekers being deported back to Zimbabwe.
"The current situation demands a compassionate response from our Government."
More than 15,000 Zimbabweans fled to Britain in the four years up to 2004, though only a few hundred have been granted asylum.
During the first three months of 2005, 95 Zimbabweans were deported.

Israeli Soldier Trial

An Israeli soldier has been found guilty of the manslaughter of a British peace activist.

Student Tom Hurndall, 22, of north London, was shot in the head while helping Palestinian children to safety at a checkpoint in the Gaza Strip in April 2003.

Ex-Sgt Taysir Hayb had denied the charges and attacked cameramen and photographers as he was led from the military court in sitting in Kastina, southern Israel.

The Israeli army initially disputed claims that the soldier had targeted Mr Hurndall at the Rafah refugee camp from a watchtower.

However, they eventually ordered a full inquiry after pressure from Mr Hurndall's family.

Hayb was also found guilty of obstructing of justice, giving false testimony and soliciting false testimony.

Mr Hurndall's sister Sophie said: "There's obviously a lot that still needs to be done. For us the main issue is not that one soldier has been found guilty of manslaughter but that this should not have been able to happen.

"It has very much been a long hard slog for the family. We have had lots of support from the public and parts of the media, but very little from the British government."

She accused the Israeli government and army of engaging in a cover-up.

"We have had very little contact with the Israeli government.

"It has been obvious that the army and government have had a process of covering up."

The ruling was given by a three-judge Israeli military tribunal.

Sentencing will be heard on July 5.

The tribunal heard that Sgt Taysir claimed he had fired a warning shot past Mr Hurndall's head to teach him a lesson for being in the area.

But the judges said Sgt Taysir's account was "confused and even pathetic".

"From that moment, Sgt Taysir began a broad campaign of lies and falsehoods to throw off the expected investigation and to remove any criminal guilt from himself," wrote Colonel Nir Avraham, the panel's head judge.

Sgt Taysir was charged over the death of the Manchester Metropolitan University student when he died after nine months in a coma.

Mr Hurndall's brother Billy was refused entry to the country for the verdict due to "security reasons".

The Israeli authorities say the exclusion was because Billy had associated with members of the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement, the group Mr Hurndall was working with when he was killed.

Civil liberties group Human Rights Watch accused Israel last week of investigating less than 5% of hundreds of cases of Palestinians killed since 2000.

Floridan Shark Attacks

BOY ATTACKED BY SHARK
A teenage boy has been attacked by a shark in Florida - just two days after a 14-year-old girl died when she was mauled in the same waters.
The boy, whose identity has not been released, was airlifted to hospital after being bitten in Cape San Blas, off Florida's Panhandle.

He is said to be in a critical condition with severe injuries and was treated at Bay Medical Centre in Panama City.
The attack follows the death of young Jamie Daigle just 80 miles south of the area, in Walton County on Saturday.
The teenager had been swimming on a boogie board with a friend around 100 yards from the shore when a 6ft Bull shark tore into her leg.
Paramedics and an air ambulance crew were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead in hospital.
A 20-mile stretch of beach was closed to the public but later reopened with double the number of lifeguards on patrol.
Florida had the largest number of documented shark attacks worldwide last year with 31.

Peace in Iraq within two years

TWO YEARS FOR IRAQ PEACE
Two years will be "more than enough" to establish security in Iraq, the country's Prime Minister Ibrahim al Jaafari has said.
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has suggested it could take up to 12 years to end the insurgency.

But after talks in Downing Street with Tony Blair, the Iraqi PM said it could come much sooner.
The timing would depend on various factors including cooperation from countries neighbouring Iraq, he said.
However, he added: "I think two years will be enough, and more than enough, to establish security in our country."
His comments come on the day a US Apache ground attack helicopter crashed in Iraq.
One witness claimed he had seen a missile hit the craft, and others said heavy gunfire had also been heard in the area shortly before the crash.
The incident happened near Taji, about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad. The fate of the two crew members is not known.
Insurgents have shot down US and other aircraft in the past with shoulder-fired missiles or small arms.
In one of the worst incidents, two US Black Hawk helicopters collided under fire in Mosul in November 2003, killing 17 soldiers.
